Gloomy, rainy, a good day to watch the dark, gloomy J. Edgar. The movie is literally dark, full of shadows and scenes either with not enough light or harsh light that gives the movie the feel of an old documentary. It’s a dark story, too. Hoover was deeply flawed. His contribution to building the FBI as a powerful and professional law enforcement agency is admirable but he often used illegal and unethical means to gain power over government leaders and private citizens he decided were dangerous. He could be brutally arbitrary. He had several obsessions–a voyeuristic obsession with people’s personal life, communism, his mother, his own image and legacy. Did anyone ever try to blackmail him over his personal life? Are there–were there–any heroes, at least just honest, decent people in government positions in Washington?
