Fay Weldon has been writing novels –30 so far– for decades. Her early novels, mostly about middling people in small towns, are clever and often disturbing. Weldon seems to have mellowed a bit. Her current series seems inspired by the popularity of Downton Abbey and Upstairs-Downstairs. Habits of the House, to be published in January, is about a titled family who has lost its wealth and moral compass and is in search of an American heiress to fortify its bank account. The heiress is found but her family’s moral compass is not exactly sterling. Well, it’s an entertaining story with pretty predictable characters and situations and I recommend it for a good winter evening’s read.
